Over the past few weeks, Year 5 have been using the work of war poets to inspire their writing. We have focused on the work of soldier poet Wilfred Owen, and have explored the language and themes of his famous poem ‘Dulce Et Decorum Est’. We are in the process of developing the poem to write as a narrative, and have been inspired by the range of powerful figurative language the poem uses to describe the horror of war.
This work has also helped us to understand Remembrance Day, and why we wear our poppies in honour of soldiers who, like Wilfred Owen, sacrificed so much.
Year 5, which of the war poems we have read have you enjoyed most, and why? Answers in the comments please!
