🌱 Our Eco Councillors have been elected! 🌍
There was a lot of excitement in school last week as we held our Eco Councillor elections! 🗳️
Interested children prepared and delivered quick speeches explaining why they would make a great Eco Councillor and how they would like to help make a difference in our school and local environment. It was fantastic to see so many children sharing their ideas, listening to one another and having their voices heard.
Our new Eco Councillors are now ready to get started! We are excited to work together to think about how we can make Windy Nook Primary School greener, more sustainable and more energy efficient. 🌿💚
Some of the ideas we might explore include:
♻️ Improving our recycling and reducing the amount of waste we produce
💡 Finding ways to save energy around school, such as switching off lights and devices
🌳 Planting and caring for trees, flowers and other wildlife-friendly areas
🐝 Creating spaces to support bees, butterflies and other pollinators
🚶 Encouraging walking, scooting and other greener ways of travelling to school
💧 Thinking about how we can reduce water waste
🥪 Looking at food waste and ways we can make our lunches and snacks more sustainable
🧥 Encouraging reuse, swapping and repairing rather than throwing things away
🧹 Organising litter picks and helping to care for our local environment
📢 Sharing our eco ideas with the wider school community and encouraging everyone to get involved
Our first exciting step will be meeting with Sam Corban, Waste & Recycling Engagement Officer at Groundwork NE & Cumbria, to learn more about waste, recycling and the positive changes we can make.
Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child – the right to have our views heard and taken seriously.
Article 24 – children have the right to a clean and safe environment
Article 29 – education should help children develop respect for the natural environment. 🌍💚
We can’t wait to see what our Eco Councillors achieve!
Small actions can make a BIG difference! 🌱✨
