Continuing our diversity theme, we enjoyed reading You Be You by Linda Kranz and talking about how all of the fish in the story are different and unique, just like we are. The children made links between the colourful fish in the book and themselves, discussing their own interests, ideas and special qualities. We explored this story through a range of creative activities, including painting pebbles to look like fish. Some children carefully copied the illustrations from the book, while others created their own imaginative designs. We also made fish using small plastic bottles, double-sided tape, wool and googly eyes, wrapping the wool carefully around the bottles to create colourful fish. At the easel, children continued to develop their creativity by painting fish, and on the interactive whiteboard they designed their own digital fish creations.
In our phonological awareness and speech and language activities, we used our voices to make a variety of sounds and talked about whether they were loud, quiet, short or long. In maths, we focused on counting through a range of number rhymes, helping children develop their confidence with numbers in a fun and engaging way. We also enjoyed our weekly Squiggle While You Wiggle session, supporting early mark-making and gross motor development.
The children worked hard outdoors, helping to clear, rake and sweep the abundance of autumn leaves in the nursery yard before adding them to our leaf composter. On Friday, we collected autumn leaves and used them to make autumn crowns and bracelets, encouraging creativity while exploring the seasonal changes around us. We also supported Show Racism the Red Card by coming to nursery wearing red.
