This week we have been learning about Bonfire Night and Guy Fawkes, who famously attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The children explored this theme through a range of creative activities, including making colourful fireworks on the interactive whiteboard, creating bonfire pictures using leaves and twigs, and threading bright pipe cleaners through holes in dark card to design firework displays. These activities supported the development of fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration and creativity, while also encouraging the children to share their ideas and talk about their own Bonfire Night experiences.
In our phonological awareness sessions, we became sound detectives and sorted picture cards to identify items beginning with the sound ‘f’, such as firework, fire and feather. We also looked carefully for the ‘odd one out’ pictures that did not begin with the target sound. In maths, the children took part in a number hunt, searching for number cards 1-3 hidden around the nursery. They then represented each number using a variety of resources, including cubes, compare bears and Numicon pegs, helping to strengthen their understanding of number through practical exploration.
During our Outdoor Friday session, the children worked together to build a large bonfire using our beautiful autumn leaves before gathering around it to sing songs and drink hot chocolate. They enjoyed creating colourful firework patterns on some tarpaulin with colourful paint.
