Year 4 Beamish Sustainability Project

Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in an exciting sustainability project with Beamish Museum.

Before our visit, a member of the Beamish education team came into school to teach us about carbon footprints, energy use, and sustainability. We explored how our daily choices can affect the environment and discussed ways that we can reduce our impact on the planet. The session helped us to think carefully about how energy is produced and used, both at home and in school.

We then visited Beamish Museum to learn more about how people’s lives have changed over time. Our first stop was Pockerley Manor, where we discovered what life was like in the 1820s. We compared the way people lived, worked, travelled and cooked with our own lives today. It was fascinating to see how much daily life relied on manual labour and how different energy use was compared to the modern world.

Next, we explored the 1950s Town, where we learned about life over a century later. We noticed many changes in technology, transport and household appliances, and discussed how these developments affected the way people lived and used energy.

As part of the visit, we also took part in a workshop focused on renewable energy. We investigated how wind power and solar power can be used to generate electricity and considered how these sustainable energy sources can help reduce carbon emissions in the future. The workshop encouraged us to think creatively about how renewable energy can be used in our communities.

The visit was a fantastic opportunity to combine our learning about history and sustainability. We would like to thank the Beamish team for providing such an engaging and informative experience that helped us understand both the past and how we can help shape a more sustainable future.
