What a fantastic week of scientific discovery we have had in Lower Key Stage 2!
This week, we have been learning all about the three states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. We began our learning with a mystery bag challenge! The children had to use their scientific thinking to investigate the clues and predict what might be inside. They discussed their ideas, shared their reasoning and worked together to reach conclusions. We then took our learning one step further by becoming the particles ourselves! The children acted out how particles are arranged and move in each state of matter. We discovered that particles in a solid are packed closely together and vibrate in fixed positions, particles in a liquid are close together but can move around one another, while particles in a gas are spread out and move freely.
It was fantastic to see the children using their bodies to help understand what can sometimes be a tricky scientific concept!
British Values in Science
Our science learning also gave us a great opportunity to demonstrate our British Values. The children listened carefully to one another, respected different ideas and worked collaboratively during our challenges.
Through our activities, we demonstrated mutual respect and tolerance, understanding that everyone may have a different idea or explanation. We also developed democratic skills by discussing our predictions and giving everyone an opportunity to share their thoughts.
