Owls Class have been developing their understanding of addition and subtraction by using Base 10 equipment to solve two-digit calculations practically. The children explored how numbers are made up of tens and ones and worked carefully through each step of a calculation. They investigated what happens when there are more than ten ones and learned how to exchange 10 ones for 1 ten.

Although exchanging can be quite tricky, the children showed great perseverance as they practised counting accurately and following the correct method. Through using practical resources, they strengthened their place value knowledge and began to understand how exchanging helps us solve more challenging calculations. We are looking forward to building on these skills as we continue our maths learning journey.
