This week, the Snowdrops have been understanding the relationship between tenths as fractions and decimals.
The children have been exploring the nature of tenths, their decimal equivalent of 0.1, and how they make one whole part. Snowdrops have added and multiplied tenths, divided a metre into tenths, created mixed numbers and improper fractions, and balanced tenths of kilograms on scales.
To embed the concept, everyone used the dienes to great effect. This led to the class acquiring a real depth of knowledge which they put to use in reasoning and problem-solving activities.
Next week: the hundredths!
