Governor viewpoint – Ford Castle Residential

This week I was lucky enough to accompany year 6 on their residential to Ford Castle and it was absolutely fantastic!

The adventure started on Monday morning , the excitement from the children on approaching the castle was a delight to see. After lunch and an hour exploring the beautiful gardens and grounds of the castle it was straight into our groups for the next three days of packed activities. From that point it was pretty non-stop… activities included zip wire, crate stack, water challenge, leap of faith, fencing, archery, nightline , high ropes, survival skills and a historic castle tour. It was great to see the children working together in a team and facing and overcoming their individual fears. All of the staff at Ford castle were professional, knowledgeable and in many cases highly entertaining! I was made very welcome by Mr Hawdon, Mrs Preece and Mrs Short as well as all the year 6 children. Highlights for me personally were the zip wire which I enjoyed after the initial scream, drinking nettle tea around our self-made camp fire in the woods and the nightline challenge which involved Mrs Preece and I doing forward rolls in a blindfold.

There were many laughs and some tears over the 3 days but what was overwhelmingly clear was how much the children enjoyed themselves. On the way home the coach was quiet- a stark contrast to the journey up , a testament to how tired they all were after an exciting fun packed few days. Special thanks to Mr Hawdon for organising and allowing me to come along to see what a year 6 residential is all about. I cannot wait to do it again! Mrs Julie Wiper
