While it’s important that children learn and retain the basics for their return to school it is also important that they combine this with having fun.
I’ve put together some ideas to help you keep your children excited about learning:
Maths
Get baking! Measuring ingredients and using the language for measures such as millilitres, grams helps children understand and the learning is more likely to stick.

Play shops- use real coins to shop for food/ toys. Add price tags. Children can learn about the value of coins, adding and giving change. Start with items up to 10p and then increase as they become more confident.

If you have scales order a selection of toys and put them in ascending / descending order.
Use a jug with ml scale to investigate different ways to make 50ml, eg. 30ml+20ml / 500ml- 300ml+200ml.
Telling the time- refer to the clock throughout the day to help your child relate time to activities and routines eg 12 o’clock- lunch.
https://www.themathsfactor.com/ Carol Vordeman offers daily lessons and games to support learning.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ Games to support learning- Hit the button in the maths section is very popular.
Use music to learn number bonds and times tables. Get on your feet and dance, create a rap or change the words to a favourite song. When Year 2 washed their hands in school they sang the 3x table to the tune of Happy Birthday. It was amazing how quickly it stuck.
For maths games and activities you can play with your child- https://thirdspacelearning.com/blog/fun-maths-games-activities-for-kids/
Play board games such as Snakes and Ladders. Encourage your child to create new rules involving maths- add counters to squares- if you land on a counter you have to count in 5s etc…
Children may like to create their own version of a board game.
Create codes to send messages. H=4 E=3 L=12 O=10 so 2×2, 1×3, 4×3, 6×2, 2×5 = HELLO.
Handwriting
Exercises to develop handwriting can be disguised as fun activities such as dance moves or art and crafts.

Colouring in is also a good hand/ finger strengthener. Try taking your pencil for a walk and colouring in the shapes.
Touch typing
A good opportunity to develop touch typing skills.

Reading and Writing
Read every day. Reading is necessary to access all areas of the curriculum.
Reading to your child means they can access books they wouldn’t be able to read themselves yet and it can bring a story alive. It helps children with their understanding and knowledge of how stories work- structure, language etc.
Create a play based on a story you have read.
Use sock puppets to re-create a story.
Free audible books are now available online for children and adults.
Choose an object from around the house- how many adjectives can they use to describe it.
Bring back the diary. Encourage your child to record what they have been doing by writing and drawing. It’ll be an interesting record for them to refer back to when they talk about it with their own children!
Retell a story by creating a comic strip or make up their own character and plots.
How many words can you think of that rhyme with can/ clean/ phone? Time how many you can find in 1 minute.
How many words can you think of that begin/ end with different letters?
How many syllables can you clap? class/room 2 syllables, el/e/phant- 3 syllables.
On pieces of paper write nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. Turn them upside down and make silly sentences by adding missing words.
Science
Investigate.
Which materials make the best parachutes?
Can you make a bridge out of pasta?
Can you build a boat out of cardboard that can still float in the sink?

Grow seeds- cress grown very fast- they can also be planted so children can grow their names or pictures.
Create a rainbow in a jar.

Create a treasure hunt- you could add maths-based/ general knowledge/ grammar questions or your child could create their own.
Set up a Scavenger Hunt around the house/ garden. Find something beginning with t, something that rhymes with can…
Design the perfect playground.
Sketch.

etc to create pictures or 3D crafts. Google ‘craft ideas KS1’ on images for more.
