Maths Attack

Bluebells were delighted to have a maths lesson with lots of whiteboard drawings today! We have been working on reading, counting, writing and making numbers to 1000 this week, and to wrap this together, we had a fun session representing numbers in a host of different ways.

The children first discussed what a number is. Some children said a number was ‘digits’, but we explained that numbers could be shown in many different ways, such as digits, words, place value charts, bar models, part-whole models. We even had children drawing ice-creams to represents tens and hundreds!

We learned that a number is an amount or ‘quantity’ of something. For example, we said that most children in our class were ‘7’. However, they are not just ‘7’ they have ‘7 years’ of life. The number relates to something – but that number can be shown in many different ways.

We also learned that there are ten 1s in 10 and ten 10s in 100.
