Black History Month 2020

The whole school has been celebrating Black History Month over the past few weeks. In the UK, Black History Month is celebrated every October and it began as a way of remembering important people and events in black history.  It has provided a fantastic opportunity for us to recognise the outstanding contributions people of African and Caribbean descent have made to our country and to other countries for many generations. We have been celebrating Black History Month by learning about key figures, as well as unsung heroes of black history. We have been listening to influential musicians such as Aretha Franklin and Bob Marley. We have also been celebrating the successes of inspirational sports persons such as Kelly Holmes, Simone Biles and Mo Farrah. The children have had a chance to explore themes around equality and civil rights. Each class has been reading a book exploring black history themes, written by a black author. From Year 2 to Year 6 each class has focused on one inspirational person from the past, such as  Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Mary Seacole, Muhammad Ali  and Nelson Madella. Year 1 explored African cultures and traditions. Nursery and Reception looked closely at the artist Alma Thomas and created their own paintings in the same style. The children have thoroughly enjoyed taking part and exploring the themes within Black History Month.
