Today, Bluebells got their first taste of fractions – and Mr. Newman’s cakes! We have started a new topic in Maths and it is all about understanding how fractions work.
We started with 1 whole cake and we then said that if we cut it into 2 equal parts, each part is 1/2. Then we cut the cake into 4 equal parts and we understood that each piece was worth 1/4. We learned that the top number of the fraction is the ‘Numerator’ (the number of parts we have) and the bottom number in the fraction is the ‘Denominator’ (the number of parts altogether).
As we have a ‘Never Waste Cake’ Policy in Year 3, the children had to help eat up the cake – children with allergies had a different treat.
