Winter Wonder

This week Owls and Robins discussed the different ways in which animals adapt for and manage to get through the cold winter weather. We learnt that some animals hibernate or migrate whilst others grow a layer of fat for insulation or grow longer/thicker fur so they have a winter coat to stay warm.

We want to see what it would be like to either grow a winter coat or a layer of fat to keep ourselves warm in the winter so we took part in a short comparative investigation.

All the children took turns to put a finger in a freezing cold, icy bowl of water. We discussed what words we could use to describe the temperature and how it felt on our skin. Then we wrapped cotton wool around our finger, (to represent fur) and placed our wrapped finger inside a plastic glove (to represent a layer of fat.) We then placed our finger back in the bowl of icy water and used comparative language to compare how it felt this time compared to before.

We were amazed how our finger did not feel as cold as it was protected!
