Science:
This half term we are going to explore plants and trees in our environment. Can you see many flowers, plants and trees around where you live? There are lots of different types of flowers and tress, can you name any to your grown up?
Watch the video below, it introduces Fiona, who works at Kew Gardens; she talks about her work there and about how she collects seeds for a millennium seed bank. Introducing a variety of plants, she talks about the parts of a plant and their functions comparing and noticing the differences between different plants.
This half term we are going to plant two different types of seed and then watch and compare how they grow over the half term. They are cress seeds and sunflower seeds.
We will be able to think about how we will need to look after them and compare the differences in their size and appearance.
Task – All the resources needed are in your home learning packs. These include: planting instructions, 2 plant pots, cress seeds, sunflower seeds, cotton wool and a plant diary.
Can you plant the seeds today, planting the sunflower seed in soil in one pot and the cress on the cotton wool in the other pot. (There are instructions both here online and in your home learning packs.)
Once you have planted them can you start your plant diary by writing your first entry about how you planted the seeds. (This is also found in your home learning packs.)
Draw a picture for the sunflower seed planting in the left hand box and write a describing sentence below. Do the same for the cress seeds in the right hand size box. How were these two seeds planted differently? Was anything the same? Make sure you include the differences in how they were planted.
We will continue our diaries later in the half term.
