This week in years 3 and 4 the children have been investigating the hardness of different rocks. Last week, we learned about the three different rock types igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. This week we tested six different rocks samples to see which rock was the hardest. First, we discussed how our investigation will remain fair and wrote a method and instructions list. The children then predicted which rock they thought would be the hardest and which would be the softest. Then, the children tested the six samples rubbing them with a screw, paper clip and their finger nail to assess the damage caused. Using their results the children then concluded which rock was the softest and which was the hardest.
The children worked fantastically throughout their investigation and there was lots of scientific discussion within the classroom. Take a look at some pictures of our rock detectives in action!
