Future Researchers, Designers and Builders in Nightingales

In Nightingales we have been very busy this week finding out about how to build a vehicle that could travel at least 50cm.

We researched different types of vehicles in groups. We wrote down as many vehicles as we could such as ambulance, lorry, coach, bus, car and van.

Then we realised we could describe a pram, a shopping trolley and even a wheelbarrow as a vehicle!

We looked at the purpose of these vehicles too and realised that there are lots of different reasons for needing a vehicle.

We labelled the parts of the vehicles (headlights, wing mirrors, windscreen) we had chosen as part of our research.

Next, we learned new vocabulary: axles and chassis. In groups we connected the axles and wheels and explored different chassis.

Our first chassis was a square of card and this didn’t work as it had no way to attach to the axles.

Our second chassis worked much better because there were holes in the sides of it to attach it to the axles.

We also looked at different ways to keep the wheels in place so they didn’t roll off when the vehicle moved.

Our third chassis didn’t work because the holes hadn’t been measured accurately to ensure they were equal on both sides.

We designed the side view of our vehicle. We thought of ways to make this personal to ourselves.

We then thought about how we would add a design to the roof, bonnet and boot of our cars.

Our next step was to think about what resources we would need to build our cars. We wrote this in a bullet pointed list so it would be easier to follow.

We had to measure our axles carefully to make sure they were equal to each other before we used a hacksaw to cut them carefully.

We carefully applied our designs to the body of our cars using our planning sheet to help us.

As our body was a net we had to cut it out carefully and take lots of care gluing the correct parts when putting it together.

We were thrilled with our results!

We evaluated our vehicles considering if we had met the challenge.

Then we looked at ways we could have improved our vehicles further.

Some of our ideas were: be more precise when cutting, make the folds more accurate or to use the glue more carefully.
