Dear Parent/ Carer
After the half-term break we are having a Growth Mindset re-launch. We introduced this a few years ago and it is still at the heart of everything we do in school but the re-launch will give us the opportunity to be more explicit.
We are teaching the children that there are two different mindsets that they can choose to have: fixed and growth.
Fixed Mindset:
-
I like my work to be easy.
-
I don’t like to try a challenge.
-
I want people to praise me for how clever I am.
-
I believe I cannot change how clever I am.
-
I don’t like to try new things because I won’t be very good at it.
-
I give up easily.
Growth Mindset:
-
I never give up.
-
I like my work to be difficult – it means I am learning.
-
I love challenges.
-
I want people to praise me for the effort I put into my work.
-
I believe I can get more intelligent by working hard.
-
I feel clever when I’m learning something new.
-
I learn from my mistakes.
Having a growth mindset can improve children’s progress and attainment.
On the first day back, the children will be taking part in activities that will help them to understand this. Each week we will continue to explore this with a variety of activities, including videos about Mojo and positive messages around the classroom. The video links will be posted on google classroom each week for you to watch and discuss with your child.
The messages we are giving the children are:
-
We are proud of the effort they put into things rather than how clever they are.
-
The brain being like a muscle – the more they use it, the stronger it gets.
-
Encourage them to not give up if they are finding something difficult.
-
Let them know that we all make mistakes and they shouldn’t be afraid to give things a go. We model how mistakes help us to learn.
-
We encourage them to try something new or challenging.
