This morning in Tulips, the children began learning about area. To start the lesson, children were shown images of different shapes and they had to estimate how many post it notes it would take to make each shape. In groups, the children then made the shapes using post it notes and compared the actual amount to their estimate. We then discussed which shape covered the largest surface of their desk and which covered the smallest. The children then learned that the surface a shape takes up is it’s areas. We then discussed different methods for finding area and decided that measuring in squares was the most efficient. The children had lots of super maths chat!
