Stick and Stone…. the perfect ten!

This week in nursery, we have focused on the story, Stick and Stone. The story beautifully illustrates the importance of friendship and loneliness by incorporating the main characters, Stick and Stone who make a “perfect 10”. We have produced the number ten using, paint, chalk, pencils, large construction equipment, natural resources (sticks, stones, leaves, pine cones and grass) and using the computer. We made our own Stick and Stone by drawing happy and sad faces onto sticks and stones which initiated some fabulous discussions about emotions and feelings. We then used the Stick and Stone characters to act out the story which was great fun! During phonics we revisited rhyming words. We worked on shape recognition and properties singing, excising to a shape themed song, playing shape corners and pretending to be a teacher by asking, “How do you know it is a square (triangle, circle or rectangle)?” We participated in Squiggle While You Wiggle outdoors and we also made our own play dough. During our outdoor Friday session, we did some gardening and helped Miss Pearson remove overgrown branches and took them to our school compost heap. We composted our snack cores and peelings into our nursery compost bin. We also created huge number tens with a variety of resources.
