Making a rib cage

This week, Tulips, Snowdrops and Bluebells investigated the rib cage and its functions. We have been doing wider learning about the skeleton but our focus for this investigation was all about how our rib cage protects vital organs, such as the heart. The children took a pretend heart (a teacake!) and were tasked with designing and making a rib cage that would protect the teacake from being damaged.

Each class was given art straws and sticky tape. Small groups collaborated superbly to to construct a rib cage that could be dropped from varying heights and not break.

The rib cages were very successful and many teacakes made it through the investigation unscathed…although not ready to eat.
