On Friday, we celebrated a national event by taking part in the #LetGirlsPlay campaign. This campaign is designed to help get more girls involved in football and address some of the gender inequalities that currently exist. As part of this day, children had an assembly in the morning, where they learnt about the history of women’s football and reflected on their own feelings towards football. In class, children engaged with videos that showed stories from real women’s footballers and thought about how we could help to make sure football was more equal. KS2 wrote pledges to outline how they would make football more inclusive and fair for all. Some girls from KS2 also had a fantastic opportunity to play some friendly football matches against Colegate. Finally children across the school were able to take part in a range of footballing activities and were treated to a special visitor in the afternoon- Katy Watson. Katy is an ex- Windy Nook pupil, who has had great success in football playing for Sunderland women’s team and England under 19s! It was a great day to celebrate women and girls within football and we hope that it encouraged more girls to get involved.
