Today, Elms, Oaks and Beeches have taken part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) event, which was run by the Smallpiece Trust in partnership with the RAF. Children were given the opportunity to learn about how rockets travel into space and how their design and engineering enables this. Children then designed and made their own rockets before testing the m in the hall, investigating what the best angle for launch is. Over the course of the day, children have used skills from all areas of STEM, as well as developing their teamwork and communication skills to work in small groups, sharing ideas and collaborating to make their projects successful. The children were then taught about sustainability, and challenged to design an ‘Aircraft of the Future’, with sustainability a key focus of their design. The children had to think about an audience and purpose for their aircraft, as well as thinking carefully about how to fuel it and ensure it was aerodynamic to improve sustainability.
We have had an excellent day, and enjoyed taking the opportunity to develop our skills in STEM subjects.
