A Taste of Autumn: Cooking, Creativity and Colour!

This week, the children enjoyed a rich and engaging sensory experience inspired by Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper. After reading the story together, they took part in a hands-on cooking activity, safely chopping onions, garlic, and pumpkin with adult support. They learned about kitchen safety, developed fine motor skills, and helped clean up afterwards—reinforcing responsibility and self-care routines. Everyone had the chance to taste the soup, using descriptive language to talk about its smell, texture, and flavour. Outdoors, the children explored seasonal changes by collecting and sorting autumn-coloured leaves into hoops, and created leaf caterpillars by threading leaves onto pipe cleaners with faces they had drawn earlier. They also revisited the scent pots from last week’s group time, using them independently to talk to each other about the different smells, sorting them into ones they liked and disliked, and explaining why. The Halloween spirit added extra excitement, with spooky slime and gel in the water tray, themed decorations in the home corner, and plenty of imaginative costume play. It’s been a wonderful week full of learning, creativity, and autumnal fun!
