Elms and Oaks took part today in the Road to RIAT STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) challenge. We first learnt about how rockets get into space. We used this knowledge to design our own rockets, thinking about the most effective shapes for the fins and nose cone. We plan to test our rockets next week in order to see which features are most successful. We also took part in the Road to RIAT challenge to design a plane of the future. The children were encouraged to think about purpose, audience, materials and sustainability when designing their aircraft. As well as design and manufacture, the children also worked on their teamwork and communication skills, which are also essential for STEM careers. We hope the session has inspired children to consider STEM careers in future.
