This week, Years 3 and 4 put their engineering hats on as part of their science learning about the human body. The children were challenged to design and build structures using paper straws to protect the chocolate layer of a teacake.
The teacake represented our vital organs, such as the brain and heart, and the paper straw structures represented our bones. The children explored how bones act as a protective framework, keeping our most important organs safe from harm. The children tested different designs, thought carefully about strength and stability, and worked brilliantly as teams to improve their models.

Article 24 (Right to good health) links to learning how our bodies work and how to look after them.

Article 28 (Right to education) and Article 29 (Goals of education) were shown through active learning, problem-solving, teamwork and creativity.
The children showed fantastic curiosity, resilience and cooperation, while deepening their understanding of how our bodies protect us every day. Well done, Years 3 and 4 – some future engineers and scientists in the making!
