This week in Nursery we took part in Science Week by carrying out a fun water experiment. We began by half‑filling a bucket with water and inviting the children to notice the starting water level before placing a floating dinosaur into the bucket and observing how it sat on top of the water. The children were then given the challenge: “Can you get the dinosaur to the top of the bucket without touching it with your hands?” Using stones and pebbles, they explored adding them one at a time and quickly began noticing how the water level changed. We supported their thinking with questions such as “What do you notice happening to the water?”, “Is it going higher or lower?”, “How many stones do you think we’ll need?” and “What happens if you add a bigger one?” The children were fully engaged and excited as they watched the water rise and helped the dinosaur reach the top.
We completed the Mother’s Day gift that we started last week and are very excited to give them to our families! In maths, we explored grouping by separating toys into parts and counting to understand that whether items are together or split into different groups, the total amount stays the same. For phonological awareness, the children focused on rhyming words, using picture cards to find and match rhyming pairs while listening carefully for words that “sound the same at the end.” During our outdoor session on Friday we explored our school grounds looking for signs of Spring. We discovered lots of new growth on tress and bushes as well as beautiful daffodils, hyacinths and primulas.
