We then began our new Spring topic, and the children have enjoyed a range of seasonal activities. We made bright yellow spring playdough and used string, corks and green pipe cleaners to create spring flowers, thinking carefully about the different parts of a plant such as roots, bulbs, stalks, leaves and petals. The children also started making a special Mother’s Day gift, and we’ll be able to share more about that next week.
In maths, we played our Mystery Change game to practise making five, adding, taking away and representing numbers with counters. On the interactive whiteboard the children enjoyed a dinosaur ordering game to build their understanding of number order.
As a lead‑in to Science Week next week, we carried out an experiment to explore the question “Can we make dirty water clean?” The children made simple filters and compared their filtered water with the original, noticing what had changed.
We also went on a Spring listening walk to develop phonological awareness, using our ears to hear signs of spring such as birds chirping and leaves rustling. We used clipboards and paper outside to draw what we heard.
On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day. The children took part by making their own Gruffalo masks, and we displayed some of these proudly on our nursery door. We enjoyed reading The Gruffalo together, and some of our Key Stage 1 pupils joined us to share stories on cosy blankets, which the children absolutely loved.
