Spring Flowers, Sorting Games and Creative Play in Nursery!

We have thoroughly enjoyed making the most of the spring sunshine this week and have spent even more time outdoors. Some of us worked hard using wheelbarrows to transport bags of sand to the sandpit, carefully cutting the bags open with scissors and tipping the sand inside. In nursery, the children took part in a focused spring flower drawing activity. They closely observed real primulas and ranunculin flowers, noticing their colours, shapes, and patterns before choosing their preferred drawing materials—coloured pencils, pastels, crayons, or felt pens. The children created vibrant, individual pieces of artwork that will soon brighten our cheerful spring wall display. In maths, we continued with last week’s approach to sorting, grouping objects into categories such as big/small and vehicles/cars/trains/others. This encouraged the children to talk about similarities and differences while developing early mathematical thinking. For phonological awareness, we played a fun Guess the Instrument game to support careful listening and sound‑discrimination skills. We also made orange playdough, which the children used to create more beautiful spring flowers, helping to develop creativity and fine‑motor control. On the interactive whiteboard, the children enjoyed an ordering‑mushrooms game, practising sequencing and early maths skills in a playful, engaging way. During our Outdoor Friday session, we enjoyed a range of activities including exploring the mud kitchen and digging area, becoming scientists as we discussed and investigated floating and sinking in the water area, raking fallen leaves to add to the leaf composter, and using rollers and paintbrushes to make marks on the ground.
