The children in the Reception Classes have made a fantastic start to our Planting and Growing topic. The children explored soil, prepared garden beds and learned why plants need the right conditions to grow. They were especially fascinated by worms, discovering how these help to turn food waste into compost. After emptying the composter, the children used the compost to enrich the soil, making real-life links between recycling, caring for the environment and growing food. Through hands-on experiences and discussion, they began to understand change over time and how living things work together. We planted the amazing beans that children have brought back to school. We were amazed at how much they have grown! We also enjoyed reading Oliver’s Vegetables by Vivian French and planted our own salad plants. We are really looking forward to watching them grow and harvesting them at the end of term.
