Our Key Stage 1 children have been busy scientists this week, exploring different materials and their properties! The classroom was filled with excitement as the children investigated a wide range of objects made from wood, plastic, metal, fabric and more.
First, the children worked together to sort the materials into groups. They thought carefully about what made each material the same or different. Some sorted by how things looked, while others grouped objects by how they felt – such as hard, soft, rough or smooth. It was fantastic to hear the children using scientific vocabulary and explaining their ideas to one another.
Next, we moved on to our big investigation: Which materials are waterproof? The children made predictions about what they thought would happen before carrying out their tests. Using water trays, they carefully tested different materials to see if they would stay dry or let water through.
There were lots of surprised faces as some materials behaved differently to what they expected! The children discovered that materials like plastic and metal are usually waterproof, while paper and fabric often soak up water. They recorded their findings and talked about which materials would be best for making things like raincoats or umbrellas.
Throughout the learning, the children showed wonderful teamwork, curiosity and respect for each other’s ideas. They listened carefully, shared resources, and encouraged one another as they explored.

Article 29: Education should help you become the best you can be and teach you to respect others and the world.
