Tree Detectives: Discovering Nature Around Us

This week the children enjoyed a lovely mix of group time and learning through play. During a Circle Time we began with a short songs warm‑up using familiar action songs such as Let’s Go Walking and Funky Monkey, helping to build confidence, relationships and a sense of belonging as children copied actions, moved their bodies and laughed together. We then shared a calm circle activity where a soft toy was passed around while music played, and when it stopped children were encouraged to say their name, with gentle adult support where needed, promoting turn‑taking, listening and pride in speaking within the group. In maths sessions, some of the children played Fantastic Five, taking turns to roll a dice or choose a dot card, counting objects into the pot and stopping to celebrate together when they reached five. The children also enjoyed a phonics awareness game focusing on the sound m, exploring real objects hidden in a bag, and a matching activity using numbered Stick Man pictures to recognise numbers and count the correct number of sticks, supporting early number recognition and counting skills. On the interactive whiteboard, the children played a JoJo and Gran game called Parcel Surprise, where they helped dress JoJo in suitable summer clothes. Continuing our stick theme we read Stick Man and Leaf Man during snack time. During our outdoor Friday session some of use watered our sunflower seedlings. We used an identification guide to identify some of the trees in our Nursery garden and went for a walk to our ‘top field’ to identify some trees there too.
