This week we continued our transport theme across all of our learning areas, with a wide range of hands-on and creative activities. In the writing area, the children practised their cutting skills by carefully cutting out different forms of transport and then matching and gluing them onto the correct vehicle silhouettes, helping to develop both fine motor control and recognition. In the maths area, we enjoyed playing pairs and snap using vehicle cards, supporting turn-taking, memory and matching skills. On the interactive whiteboard and computer, the children used their creativity to design their own space rockets. We also explored the seasons by playing a game where we selected appropriate clothing to match different types of weather. At the playdough table, we used some new vehicle mats which included instructions for what to make. The children followed the prompts and created the models using playdough that we had made ourselves earlier in the week, which they were very proud of. Outdoors, we continued to care for our tomato and sunflower plants, making sure they are growing well. We also noticed that the lavender plants in our Key Stage 1 yard are now blooming. The children created some beautiful drawings of the lavender, and we used these in our maths tray activity where we rolled a dice, counted the number and placed the correct amount into numbered pots, reinforcing counting skills in a fun and meaningful way. As part of our DT work, the children made a special Father’s Day/special person card, practising important skills such as carefully folding the card and matching up the corners, using their thumbs and fingers to print a bunch of grapes, drawing on the stalks, and gluing in the insert and caption before writing their name inside—showing lots of effort and developing a wide range of fine motor and creative skills. Outdoors, we continued to care for our tomato and sunflower plants, making sure they are growing well. During our outdoor Friday session we took some sports equipment onto our ‘top field’ and practiced controlling footballs with our feet by kicking the balls to each other. We also paired up to use use cricket bats, bowling a tennis ball and trying to hit it with the cricket bat.
