Wheels, Words and Wonderful Learning in Nursery!

This week we continued our transport topic and the children explored their creativity using the interactive whiteboard to design their own cars. They carefully chose the colour of the body, selected the type of wheels, added numbers or motifs, and even decided what type of helmet or hat the person in the car would wear. Once their designs were complete, they used their name cards to independently type their name onto their finished picture before printing their creations, showing growing confidence with both technology and early writing skills. During our phonological knowledge session, we focused on the sound ‘n’. The children enjoyed playing a “pass the bag around” game, taking turns to pull objects out, name them, and practise identifying the initial sound. Some ‘odd’ objects were included to encourage deeper thinking and discussion about sounds, which supported their listening skills and phonemic awareness in a fun and engaging way. We continued to read transport themed stories during snack time sessions. In the maths and finger gym area, the children developed their counting and number recognition skills by counting dots on lolly sticks and matching them with the correct numbered pegs. This activity also helped to strengthen their fine motor skills as they carefully clipped the pegs into place. We also came together for a whole class session where the children sang and moved to action songs. They practised using a clear and confident voice, introducing themselves with the sentence “My name is…”, helping to build their confidence in speaking in front of others. Our sunflower seeds are thriving, and the children have been excited to observe the changes. We have now transferred even more of them into larger pots in our nursery garden, continuing to care for them and watch them grow. During our outdoor Friday session we painted the tyres of some toy vehicles, after looking at the tread on the tyres. We then made tracks with them on the ground noticing the different widths and marks that each on made.
