School Council Elections in LKS2

This week in Lower Key Stage 2, our pupils have been busy writing and delivering their own speeches as part of the elections for each class’s School Councillor. It has been wonderful to see the children step up to the challenge, speaking with confidence and passion as they shared their ideas about how they would represent their classmates.

Alongside the excitement of the elections, we have also been focusing on Oracy – the ability to express ourselves clearly and confidently when speaking and listening. Oracy is a vital skill for children because it:

  • Builds confidence in speaking to different audiences.

  • Helps children organise their thoughts and express ideas clearly.

  • Improves listening skills, teamwork, and respectful discussion.

  • Prepares pupils for future opportunities, both inside and outside school.

We are so proud of all our pupils for their enthusiasm, courage, and respect throughout the process. Congratulations to our newly elected School Councillors – we look forward to seeing the positive difference you will make this year!

  • Article 13Freedom of expression: Children have the right to share their thoughts and ideas in different ways, including speaking, writing, art, or any other form of expression.

  • Article 15Freedom of association: Children have the right to meet together and to join groups, like a school council.
