This week we have introduced our new focus on transport, and the children have been exploring this theme in lots of creative and hands-on ways. During snack time, we enjoyed reading a range of transport-themed books, which sparked discussion and curiosity about different types of vehicles. In the maths area, the children used 2D shapes to design and create their own vehicles. They looked at examples of shape vehicles and used these as inspiration to build cars, buses and other forms of transport, carefully selecting and naming shapes as they worked. On the interactive whiteboard, the children also played a shape game where they had to rotate shapes to fit them into the correct spaces, further developing their spatial awareness and understanding of position. At the playdough table, the children showed great imagination by making different parts of vehicles such as wheels and helicopter blades, which they then positioned onto images of transport with missing parts. This supported both their fine motor skills and their understanding of how different vehicles are constructed. In maths, the children also built towers using cubes and matched them to the correct number cards. They were encouraged to recognise and name the numbers, developing their counting and number recognition skills. During phonological awareness sessions, we played a fun “pass the bag” game where children explored objects beginning with the sound ‘t’. They listened carefully and enjoyed identifying the ‘odd ones out’, helping to strengthen their listening and sound discrimination skills. We were also very excited to see how much our sunflower seedlings had grown over half term! The children helped to re-pot them into larger plant pots, taking great care as they worked and learning about how plants grow and what they need to thrive. To finish the week, we held our own Nursery Sports Day on Friday. The children took part in a carousel of activities including a running relay race, egg and spoon race, hurdle race, javelin throwing and football dribbling. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm, teamwork and determination throughout the day.
