10.00 am a fishing trawler hails the fleet telling them they have seen a suspicious vessel ‘throwing things overboard’ near the mouth of the River Thames.
HMS Amphion chases the German ship and together with 4 cruisers sinks the German minelayer Konigin Luise. The ship takes only 6 minutes to sink. 50 survivors from a crew of 130 are taken aboard the British ships including the captain.
6 August
6.00 am HMS Amphion is struck by a mine, that had been previously laid by the Konigin Luise. Twenty minutes after the mine struck, the ship was abandoned. Some men were badly burned. Three minutes later a huge explosion rocked the ship. 130 of the men and the Paymaster had been lost in the first blast, as well as 20 German prisoners, while the Captain, 16 officers and 135 men were saved.
