Geography Week – The Ripple Effect

We have teamed up with Northumbrian Water to find out what the Ripple Effect is and as a school how we can make some small changes to make a big difference.  Water is vital for all life on this planet. It is a precious resource that is essential for the environment and the health of us all. Northumbrian Water wants to support this important work through The Ripple Effect: When we all make small changes to our water use, we can make big waves in protecting our precious water supply.

The children across the school have enjoyed Geography week by taking part in a number of lessons and activities looking at different ways we can save water.

EYFS took part in a discussion when they use water and how they could make simple changes with a sorting activity; taking a shower instead of a bath, use a full dishwasher rather than running the tap to fill a dish, collect rain water to water your plants.

KS1 learnt about valuing water in their home. Looking at where in the house they use water and how they could save water; only use half a load of washing in your washing machine, wear your clothes more than once before washing them, use a short flush when using the toilet.

LKS2 carried out an experiment looking at how much water is wasted when you leave the tap running when brushing your teeth and the importance of switching off the tap when you are not using it. Then used the water to water the flower beds. They also looked at different scenarios and the impact of water and the water cycle.

UKS2 discussed how water travels around the water cycle, playing true or false water facts, designed posters explaining how to value and save water. They also looked at the different professions within a water treatment plant and what role they would like to play and why.
