Mini-beast Exploration During Science Week

We have thoroughly enjoyed enticing mini beasts into our nursery garden and identifying them this week. We made four different mini beast traps throughout the week which included; a butterfly bar (mashed banana on a plate), a beetle bucket (a bucket with holes in, placed in a hole in the ground, containing sticks, stones, wood chippings, soil and leaves), a potato trap (a halvedĀ  baked potato, placed upside down on some soil) and a pitfall trap (a yoghurt pot containing mashed banana, submerged in soil). We discovered that slugs, snails and fruit flies love banana! Unfortunately, even though we made some fabulous butterfly bars, we didn’t manage to attract any butterflies which was perhaps due to the rain weather and cold temperatures! We did however, encounter, worms, centipedes and woodlice.
