This morning, the children in year 4 had a visit from Reverend Danie and Reverend Ken. The children were told the story of Saint Cuthbert. They were lucky enough to see a special replica copy of the Lindisfarne Gospels. This copy is so important that Reverend Danie and Reverend Ken needed to wear special gloves to protect the front cover. The children learned about the life of Cuthbert and how he was made a saint. Then, they learned why the monks at Lindisfarne decided to write the special Lindisfarne Gospels. Reverend Danie then explained the journey taken by monks to protect Saint Cuthbert’s body from Viking invaders.
The children learned how important Saint Cuthbert was to people many years ago and how many people went on pilgrimages to visit his body after he died. Reverend Danie explained how there is now a shrine to Saint Cuthbert at Durham Cathedral. In our history lessons we have been learning about the importance of Religion to the Anglo-Saxons and about Saint Bede who is also now buried at Durham Cathedral.
The children had a fantastic morning and aske lots of fantastic questions! Well done year 4.
