DT – King of the Castle w.c. 13.2.23

KS1’s DT project this week was to design a castle strong enough to protect the king! The first part of the process was to research different types of castles and identify the features found on both stone castles and motte & bailey castles. Using this research, the children then had to think about how they could make the features using household materials. The design brief specified that each castle needed battlements, cylindrical towers, a portcullis (Y2) and a drawbridge (Y2). After the careful consideration of what household materials we could use to make the castle, we drew 2 design ideas that were detailed and labelled. The following day saw KS1 make the castles using their design plans. Many children put their own individual designs on the castles and they turned out fantastic! Finally, the children had to evaluate their design and consider what the strengths of their design were and how they could best strengthen the design next time. This project linked with our History topic really nicely and the whole Key Stage loved taking part.
