In years 3 and 4, we have been learning about what happens to our food after we eat it. The children used different items to recreate the stages of human digestion. Biscuits (food) were placed into a bag (stomach) and juice (enzymes) and water (saliva) were added. The bag (stomach) was squeezed, and the food was broken down. The contents were then poured into tights (small intestine) and pushed through. Liquid (nutrients) was released. The food then entered the large intestine (cup) where it was squeezed through a hole showing how waste is removed from the body. The children had lots of fun exploring digestion in a practical way.
