PSHE in Year 5 and 6: Healthy Friendships, Gang Culture and Taking Risks

This half term, Years 5 and 6 have been learning about healthy friendships, gangs and taking risks.

We read a story called ‘Knockdown Row’ in our English lessons, which followed the story of a boy who takes dangerous risks to attain membership of a gang, looking at the negative consequences of his behaviour and how this put him in danger. We offered advice to the character in the story about how he could act differently to keep himself safe and avoid gang-related problems.

In PSHE, we looked a the features of a healthy friendship, how to manage disagreements in friendships and where to get help with friendship worries. We also further explored the risks of gang culture, as well as learning strategies we can use to manage peer pressure or negative influences.

All of the classes held some excellent discussions and took part in drama activities to explore the issues further, and the children showed great insight and maturity when considering some very mature topics.
