To raise awareness about Down’s Syndrome, Matthew Atkinson, a young adult who has Down’s Syndrome presented an inspirational assembly this morning. He talked about what it is like to have Down’s Syndrome and the amazing things that he has achieved with his life so far. A huge thank you to Matthew for taking time out of his busy schedule and spending time with us today as he delivered an emotive and informative presentation. A huge thank you also, to everyone who donated money as part of Dress up for Down’s Syndrome Day (non-uniform day) as the money will be greatly appreciated by Down’s Syndrome North East who will use it to continue their fantastic work with people who have Down’s Syndrome and their families in the North East. Down’s Syndrome North East have produced a book called, Look at Me which a five year project to promote inclusion and raise awareness of Down’s Syndrome. It features children and adults who have Down’s Syndrome and aims to show that people are all different whether we have Down’s Syndrome or not. Matthew features in the book and he presented a copy of it to our school which we will be sharing within our classes throughout all of the key stages. As Matthew used to use Makaton signs to help him communicate when he was in nursery and reception our Early Years classes learned the signs and words to a Mr Tumble (from Cbeebies) song and performed it for Matthew and his family. https://youtu.be/z4P3clsA888 They were all very impressed!
