Years 3 and 4 have been writing newspaper reports, based on a range of subjects – including the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii, August AD79, as well as the Moon landings of July 1969.
For the report about the Moon landings, the children have studied four female African American mathematicians who played a pivotal role in making the Apollo 11 mission successful. Katherine Johnson, Christine Darden, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan overcame much racial and gender discrimination to achieve their place in history – which had been ignored for many years.
Each class has learned a lot about the story of these ‘computers’ by reading the book ‘Hidden Figures’ by Margot Lee Shetterley. The children have written excellent newspaper articles – reporting on the successes achieved by these four inspirational women.
