Lovely Leaves!

Following on from our fantastic outdoor session last Friday, we studied the leaves that we had found and  we carefully drew them. Prior to drawing them we examined the leaves through a magnifying glass and noticed some dark lines. By using our computer to retrieve information we discovered that leaves have veins in them and that when the leaves were still growing on a tree they obtained water, sugar and nutrients from these veins. Some of the leaves had tiny holes in and we found out that this was due to the early stages of decomposition and insects eating them. In maths this week we used items from our classroom to classify objects into groups by colour.  Some of us made playdough and used the kettle in our dining room kitchen to boil water which was the final ingredient. Half of the children used the playdough to participate in Playdough Disco and the other half participated in Squiggle While You Wiggle which helps to strengthen our hands and wrists for writing. Some of us produced some Autumn leaf pictures on the interactive white board. This week during our physical development session we have practised throwing and catching. On Friday we raked and swept up the beautiful Autumn leaves from our grass and yard. We transferred the leaves into wheel barrows and then put them into our compost bins. We also re-potted some bulbs from last year and put them in a cupboard until Spring. We used compost from out compost bin which was very exciting.
