On Friday, Year 4 were lucky enough to spend the day at Beamish Museum.
The children had been learning all about the coal-mining industry of our local area. They discussed the science behind coal – how it is made from plant matter – and how the trapped carbon dioxide in these plants was released when coal was being burned over many years. The children’s tasks at Beamish involved visiting the 1820s farmhouse and the 1950s village and seeing if the human carbon footprint had increased or decreased over time. They also got the opportunity to offset some of this carbon dioxide by planting trees in the gardens at Beamish.
We all had a great day exploring this wonderful place. Our special thanks goes to Catherine who did lots of brilliant work with the children to help their scientific and historical understanding.
