We’ve been busy exploring the wonders of autumn and building strong hands for writing through a variety of exciting and sensory-rich activities. The children used real claw hammers to gently tap golf tees into pumpkins, learning the parts of the hammer — the handle, head, and claw — and practicing safely removing the tees using the claw. A timer helped us take turns fairly and patiently, supporting fine motor skills, teamwork, and our autumn topic. We also got creative making pumpkin face collages using a mix of materials to explore shape, emotion, and design. The children enjoyed choosing autumnal images and drawing their own pictures to create beautiful seasonal booklets. On the computer, we completed autumn-themed jigsaws, developing problem-solving and mouse control skills. As part of our small group time and the ‘Ourselves’ topic, we explored our sense of smell using scent pots. The children took turns smelling each pot, trying to identify what was inside, and sharing whether they liked the smell or not. Scents included fabric conditioner, perfume, onion, ginger, curry powder, and lemon. This sparked lots of discussion and supported language development and sensory awareness.
