This week, we continued our focus on self-care and staying healthy. The children made a colourful fruit salad using pears and apples from our school fruit trees, along with oranges and bananas. We practised good hygiene by washing our hands before preparing food and learned about staying safe by only holding the handle of the knife while chopping. Everyone showed fantastic perseverance while chopping the tougher fruits like pears, and thoroughly enjoyed their fruit salad during snack time!
In our classroom, we’ve started a beautiful new Autumn display wall featuring photographs of the children engaging in seasonal activities like picking fruit, finding acorns, sweeping leaves, and adding them to our leaf composter. The children discussed what was happening in each photo and added their own ‘writing’ (mark making) on speech bubbles beside the images. The children also created festive Santa-themed Christmas card designs for Cauliflower Cards, a company that transforms children’s artwork into printed packs of cards, mugs, and other keepsakes.
As part of the WWF Happy By Nature initiative, which teaches the importance of forests, we found acorns and planted them in pots to see if we can grow our own trees! We tested the acorns to see if they were healthy by dropping them into water. We didn’t plant the acorns that floated, only the ones that sank. We also looked after the spinach seeds we planted last week, carefully moving them from the greenhouse and giving them some water.
