Our Science investigation this term was observing change over time. As part of our space topic, we have been considering how the Earth rotates and how this affects when we see the sun. The children learnt about how and why night and day happen and about how the sun looks like it changes position in the sky, due to the Earth rotating. To investigate whether the sun had an affect on the length and direction of a shadow, we set up an investigation. Children in all classes measured the length and turn of a shadow at regular intervals throughout the school day. We found that the time of day did affect a shadow’s length and position and could see that when the sun was highest in the sky, the shadow was shortest. The children put their results in a line graph to make them easier to analyse.
